Victoria Waugh: The State of Sustainability in the Jewellery Industry Conference, 2016 - Now

Fair Luxury in collaboration with the Goldsmiths’ Centre is hosting The State of Sustainability conference on 9 June 2025. Inviting professionals from across the jewellery, silversmithing and allied industries to the landmark conference, nearly a decade after our first conference in 2016. In light of this, we asked some of the Fair Luxury team to reflect on the changes they have seen in the industry over the last decade.

Victoria Waugh offered her thoughts on the decade since our last conference and the work that has been done. B-leader for B Corp, co-founder V&V, a responsible fashion and jewellery consultancy and co-founder of Considered Jewellery, a radically transparent jewellery brand, Victoria has a well rounded view on the jewellery industries past, and, more importantly, it’s future.

“The most exciting change I’ve witnessed is an acknowledgement from the industry that jewellery brands and retailers have a crucial role to play in improving the industry’s social and environmental impact. A decade ago, I faced closed doors when asking questions like, ‘Do you know where your gold comes from?’ Today, brands show an interest in understanding their impact.

The Fair Luxury conference is a crucial opportunity to reflect on what we’ve achieved over the last decade, review learnings, and importantly recognise the significant efforts still needed to ensure the jewellery supply chain is a fair and safe place for all involved.

I would like to see regulation compelling all brands to consider the origin of their materials and to share transparent information on production processes.  The provenance of precious metal does not begin with a Swiss refinery.  The industry must scrutinise where their metals truly come from.”

If you would like to attend The State of Sustainability in the Jewellery Industry on June 9th 2025, 1pm – 8pm at The Goldsmiths’ Centre, London you can book tickets here. Beyond this date, we hope you continue to strive to build a more responsible jewellery industry for all involved, and not just that, but encourage others to do so too.
