Encouraging viewers to question the stories behind each piece, “Perspectives” addresses some of the ways in which we can create jewellery for a fairer future. 19th – 21st October11:00am - 6:00pmLyon & Turnbull. 33 Broughton Place, EH1 3RR Edinburgh, United Kingdom Casting a fresh light on what terms such as ethical luxury can mean, the exhibition reawakens the audience to the wonder of materials and creativity with a new perspective, telling the story of a piece of jewellery from the earth to the wearer: the materials, people and processes involved from source to beautifully crafted object and showing that the value generated by a piece of jewellery can be shared by everyone involved in its creation. Perspectives is part of the Elements Festival – the annual jewellery event in Edinburgh hosted by the Incorporation of Goldsmiths. The exhibition aims to raise awareness of issues in the metal, stone and jewellery industries, exploring the sourcing of raw materials and spotlighting different approaches and initiatives for change. The work exhibited covers a range of approaches to fairly made jewellery, such as the provenance of the metal and the stones; the conditions in which makers and miners work; or the environmental and social impact of creating the finished piece. What all the work shown here has in common is a thoughtful consideration of the impacts of making jewellery and silver, underlined by a dedication to excellent design and exquisite craftsmanship. Scotland has a remarkable silversmithing and jewellery community, producing some of the world’s most imaginative design and skilled craftsmanship. A further facet of excellent craftsmanship is the consideration of the working and environmental conditions behind the finished piece – and ensuring that these are of the same excellent quality as the work itself. Curated by experts in the jewellery field, this tangible expression of Fair Luxury champions established makers alongside up-and-coming names who are redefining luxury: demonstrating the use of responsibly sourced materials and sustainability at the core of their practice and ethos, along with the highest standards of skilled craftsmanship and design. Perspectives encourages viewers to question the supply chain and to consider whether the stories of how their jewellery was made, matches with the beautiful design and craftsmanship of the final product.
