Community Awards Launch

Will your 2022 Fair Luxury Pledge be a winner of our inaugural Community Awards?

We are excited to announce the launch of the Fair Luxury Pledge Community Awards.

It’s the latest development in the Fair Luxury Pledge initiative, which was launched in January 2021 as a framework for members of the jewellery industry to adopt a more ethical approach to their operations. The scheme encourages industry professionals to identify areas for improvement within their businesses, commit to a particular change, and work towards it via steps that are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound). In doing so, it encourages jewellery businesses to think about ways of working that are more responsible, transparent and accountable, whilst creating a community for industry peers who wish to inspire one another and share knowledge.

In 2022, Fair Luxury is celebrating the successes and commitment of their Pledgers by offering a community awards ceremony to formally recognise individuals who have gone above and beyond to better their businesses.

Any Pledge officially submitted this year via our online Pledge form is entered into the awards. Those who have yet to make a 2022 Pledge are encouraged to do so, and any of the 130+ individuals who Pledged in 2021 are invited to submit a new Pledge or carry their 2021 Pledge over to this year by re-submitting it.

The awards will be split into two categories:

‘Business Practise’ – encompassing Pledges relating to consumer education, industry engagement, progress towards certification and other innovative activities

‘Materials and Sourcing’ – including Pledges that relate to improvements within supply chains and the sourcing of metals, gemstones and packaging.

Five applicants from each category will be shortlisted by the Fair Luxury Pledge team. Pledges will be judged based on the extent to which they are SMART, the level of progress and passion shown by each Pledger in attempting to achieve the outcome, and the role each Pledger played in promoting the campaign to others.

The winner of each category will then be selected from the shortlist by a panel of three independent industry judges, receiving the Pledge Community Awards Winner 2022 badge, a certificate and a feature in a ‘Fair Luxury Pledge Winners’ press release distributed to trade titles.

The deadline for Pledges eligible for the awards is 30th June 2022, allowing entrants five months to make progress on their Pledge before judging. Entrants will be asked to submit feedback on their Pledge progress in January 2023, before winners are announced at a virtual ceremony in February 2023.

So, what are you waiting for? Join our growing community of inspiring, knowledgeable, passionate and like-minded people and be in with the chance of having your hard work recognised by the industry.

Open House – Provenance Power

Provenance Power: The Positive Impact of Traceable Gold

Thursday 24 March 2022, 2pm (GMT) online via Zoom

With talk in the industry of Russian Gold entering the market to avoid sanctions it is even more important for jewellers to know the source of their gold. A traceable and transparent supply of gold not only ensures the money spent goes to the right source but has a powerful impact to the mining communities.

We’ve heard about Fairtrade Gold and Fairmined Gold in a previous Fair Luxury Open House so now we’d like to open the floor to some other initiatives in the process of bringing artisanal gold to market. We’ll hear the huge amount of work that goes into establishing a responsibly sourced supply of gold through to the impact this has directly to the mining area.

The event is free to attend but please register in advance to join us. If you have any questions please leave them in the comment box on registration.

We are pleased to be joined by

Rachel Brass (Project Director at Levin Sources)

Project Director, USAID’s Zahabu Safi (Clean Gold) Project which aims to develop and deliver activities to establish a commercially-viable, responsible and conflict-free supply chain for artisanal and small scale (ASM) gold from eastern DRC.

Duncan Marshall (Operations Manager of Betts Metals

Single Mine Origin Gold from the Hummingbird Resources Yanfolila Gold Mine in Mali. Detailed knowledge of provenance is the key to Single Mine Origin gold. From the moment it is mined, every gram of gold is traced by batch right through to the creation of a finished product. Single Mine Origin gold is segregated all the way along the supply chain, ensuring that the end consumer knows exactly what they are purchasing.

Fair Luxury Pledge 2022

The 2022 Fair Luxury Pledge has launched!

The Fair Luxury Pledge framework is designed to support you and your peers to take tangible steps towards a better business. It’s an opportunity to set a personal or business goal and to network with those that have shared aims, exchanging knowledge and ideas along the way. No matter your position in the industry or where you are on your ‘fair jewellery journey’, the Pledge scheme is here to offer motivation and a sense of community.

We know that when jewellery is produced responsibly it can provide sustainable livelihoods for all involved – from the miners of raw materials right through the supply chain to the ultimate designer or retailer of the finished piece.

As individual designers, makers, traders and educators we’ve pledged to make changes and business decisions that are driven by more than just profit. In every aspect of our work we seek to ensure that we are achieving and maintaining a safe, sustainable and just industry for all. We dream of one day casting our minds back and feeling proud to place ourselves at the core of the revolution that transformed the jewellery trade for good.

We are each at a different stage in our journey towards responsible business, but we are all working on it. No matter how big or small, our collective actions will change the world. Will you join the movement?

Through the jewellery we create and the ways we run our businesses, those who make the Fair Luxury Pledge each promise to:

Conserve and restore the environment
Work in a way that is responsible, transparent and accountable
Play a role in educating and empowering others

Now, it’s your turn. Wondering how to take it from here? It’s simple:

  1. Write down your plan of action. Which tangible steps will you take this year? Big or small, new or continuing from last year, your measures should aim towards reducing collective impact on the environment, supporting the people that you connect with and creating a more equitable world for all.
You could start by vowing simply to ensure that all your office waste is recycled responsibly, or take the plunge and commit to only sourcing artisanal and small-scale gold from now on. For some tips and ideas check out our posts here or go to the Ethical Making Resource.
  2. Share your plan with us by clicking the “take the pledge” button and completing our Pledge form.
  3. We’ll send you a link to the Fair Luxury 2022 Pledge badge in recognition of your commitment, which you can share with your website visitors and social media followers. If you have time, why not create a page on your website dedicated to explaining your pledge?
  4. Encourage a jewellery friend to join the movement.
  5. Sign up to our mailing list and keep an eye out for email updates about our webinars and events!

With your permission we’d love to share details of your pledge on social media and, along with the wider Fair Luxury community, to support and encourage you on your journey.

Open House – Pledge 2022

Open House – Thursday 27 January 2022

13.00 (GMT) online via Zoom

Join us as we review progress in 2021 and share inspiration for 2022

This time last year, we launched the Fair Luxury Pledge initiative; a new framework designed to support you and your peers to take tangible steps towards better business. The programme was an opportunity for us each to set personal goals and to network with other Pledgers with shared aims, exchanging knowledge and ideas along the way. No matter one’s position in the industry or the stage they found themselves at in their ‘fair jewellery journey’, the Pledge scheme was implemented to offer motivation and a sense of community.

12 months, over 120 Pledgers and a host of inspiring Pledge-themed Open House events down the line, we’re incredibly proud to say that the initiative was a roaring success. Seeing our industry ignite with such inspiration has been fantastic. With every Pledge taken – each just as positive and dedicated as the last – we’ve found ourselves instilled with further confidence in our collective pursuit of a fair and sustainable jewellery industry. ⠀

Now, with 2022 upon us, it’s time to reflect on the challenges and successes of the year behind us – and start hatching plans for the one ahead.

JOIN US

Our next Fair Luxury Open House is on Thursday 27th January 2022, 13:00 GMT. We’ll be taking a look back at the Pledges made in 2021, discussing the effectiveness of the Pledge framework, and exchanging ideas for 2022 Pledges.

We’ll hear from real life Pledgers, invited to discuss the areas they succeeded in, the parts that didn’t go so well, and their plans to continue journeying towards better business this year.

Do you have a Pledge success story of your own that you’re proud to share? We’d be delighted for you to spend a few moments speaking to our Open House guests about it. Please feel free to put yourself forward by dropping us a line on pledge@fairluxury.co.uk.

This event is free and open to anyone who’s interested; from existing Pledgers to newbies looking to make a positive change or two this year. All we ask is that you register your place in advance and bring along any mates that you think might benefit from making a Pledge of their own.

Jewellery is bought, displayed and passed on as a token of love, a reflection of our personalities or as means of communicating power and wealth. Though beautiful and sparkly on the surface, sadly jewellery is often tarnished by its journey into fruition, via supply chains that harbour social injustice and perpetuate environmental destruction.

This session will last for one 1 hour, details below:

– 30 min: We will go into break out rooms to enable small group conversations.
What might your pledge be? It might be something as simple as using only eco cleaning products to wash your workshop floor! Or something bigger like only using gems with a guarentee of provenance. Use the conversation to brainstorm ideas and encourage each other.

– 15 min: We will re-join the main group and each group will share some of their thoughts/ possible intentions for the pledge.

After the event you will be encouraged to fill in our Pledge form.
